Of the finalists we had two in the final five—the other being the history of video games. BIG CONGRATS to Francesco Franchi from IL, who picked up the silver for their AMAZING terrorism map.

If he’s convicted of carrying out the Boston Marathon bombings, suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev could face the federal death penalty. Reinstated in 1988, the federal death penalty now covers some 60 crimes including acts of terrorism, murder of federal law enforcement officers, and the use of weapons of mass destruction. In response to the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, President Bill Clinton signed a law in 1996 making it more difficult for convicted capital defendants to appeal their sentences. The federal government has executed only three people in the past 20 years. Currently, 58 prisoners are on federal death row, where many have been appealing their convictions or sentences—and avoiding execution—for years.

This is very different from how capital punishment was used in the past when the U.S. Federal government executed nearly a person a year from 1927-1968 before the Supreme Court ruled capital punishment unconstitutional in 1977.

The judges choose what they deem to be the best of the best in their Best in Book section, featuring the BBW Election issue.

I’m really looking forward to speaking at DESIGN TALKS 2013: “A weekend of women in art direction and design.”

Why can’t it just be a “A weekend of art direction and design?”

Those of you who know me know that my weird brand of pseudo-self-esteem prevents me from identifying as a feminist. And yet, I resent it when I see conferences with all white people and no women. The only thing that makes me more annoyed then an all-white-all-dude conference panel is when I see an all woman one.

I am not borderline psychotic. This is my feminism at work.

What I resent about female collectives is that the chatter about these groups has more to do with gender than what we do professionally. Look at me now—I am no exception writing this damn blog post about what it means to be a woman on an all woman panel.

The reason why these discussions take place is because F E M I N I S M is a movement which means of course we’ll spend a lot of time figuring out what it means. If you ask a hundred women to give you a definition of feminism you’ll get a hundred different answers. Watching sports in her underwear, browser open to THE SHIELD, burping her microwaveable mac and cheese and scratching her labia. That is someone’s feminism at work. Reading another article about how a woman can shave her legs, get a weekly manicure, cook dinner for her wife, have some babies, pack her kids’ lunches—that’s another person’s feminism at work. Some chick who designs rocket motors and delivers brutal elbow bombs to Todd Akin—that’s another person’s feminism at work. Oh look, a tampon commercial—even that is someone’s feminism at work.

That being said I’m THRILLED about this conference in Stockholm. Speaking alongside Barbara Kruger, one of our time’s greatest conceptual artists. I’ve always admired her ability to turn media cliches onto their head. If you don’t know her work you are dead to me. And body builder Lucy McRae. Okay, not that kind of body builder—she modifies the shape of the human body using technology fashion and plastic bags. Google images says it all.

And THAT is why I am going to Hall of Femmes. Not because we are feminists and “the women of art direction and design”. But because we are bad ass.
